Game Design – Design around Multi-weapon equip

I glad I played .hack//G.U. Last Recode.

Purpose:

  • How does the player changed it’s multi-equipped weapon with the same control and battle system been implemented?
  • For this post is a starting point to expand your own “equipped weapon system”

Understand a bit how the game works:

  • Each weapon unlocks have it’s own weapon skills (1-3 skills)
  • Weapon skills is equipped in one of the slots (A, B, X, Y)
  • Player uses skill in battle by pressing RB + (A, B, X or Y) and wait for cool down

The Design:
As the game progress, more weapon slots is unlocked and you are able to equip more weapons (Dagger, Great Sword, Scythe, Dual Gun) and use it’s weapon skills
The player is able to set it’s “main hand” weapon which is the starting weapon to use at the start of a battle.

  • When more weapons is unlock, it’s specific weapon’s skills is unlock and you can equip it. E.g. (A – Dagger skill, B – Great Sword skill, X – Great Sword skill, Y – Dual Gun skill)
  • If Main Hand is Dagger, pressing RB + A, simply use it’s dagger skills normally
  • But if pressing RB + B or RB + X, player acutally switch weapon into Great Sword (playing animation in a “time stop”) and uses the Great Sword skill
  • Now player’s main hand weapon becomes the Great Sword

This is probably the only game I played that handles the multi-weapon in the simpliest way.
See 2:20 or 8:10 is better:

Cons:

  • Only limit to equiping 4 weapons throughout
  • Limit to only 4 skills in use

But it is good enough for this game to be that fun.
And then this came out, which is kind of the “upgrade” of their own system for their last game
